Latest update
The trial of the Sportsbet Class Action commenced on 3 August 2026 and concluded on 20 August 2026 before the Honourable Justice Craig in the Supreme Court of Victoria. The Court has reserved judgment. This means that the Court has not yet made a decision and will take time to consider the evidence and submissions made by the parties at the trial before it delivers a detailed written judgment setting out its decision and reasons. We will not know the outcome of the trial until the judgment is delivered. The timeframe for the judgment to be delivered will depend on how long the Court takes to consider and prepare the judgment. We will contact registered Group Members as soon as possible after the Court has delivered judgment, or if there is any other significant development.

About This Case
The case is about in-play bets (also known as live bets) made on sporting events using Sportsbet’s Fast Code service. The Fast Code service is part of the in-play betting product offered by Sportsbet. A code (e.g. ‘XPE’) is shown to the customer once they make a bet selection on the app or website. The customer then calls Sportsbet and the code is recited to a Sportsbet staff member as part of placing the bet.
Betting on a sporting event after the event commences is prohibited in Australia. There is an exception to this if the bet is made wholly by telephone. We allege that Sportsbet’s use of the Fast Code service is illegal because key information about the bet is communicated otherwise than by telephone.
Court and legal claims
The class action is being conducted in the Supreme Court of Victoria.
It alleges that Sportsbet’s Fast Code service is illegal under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 (Cth), and that by providing the illegal Fast Code service:
Sportsbet engaged in misleading or deceptive conduct under the Australian Consumer Law; Sportsbet's contract with customers was illegal; and customers are entitled to a refund of their losses.

Also from Supreme Court of Victoria
This is a group proceeding (class action) brought on behalf of persons who placed one or more bets using Sportsbet’s ‘ Fast Code service’ from 24 December 2018 to 24 December 2024, and lost more money than they won.
It is contended that in using the Fast Code, Sportsbet contravened the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 (Cth) by providing an in-play betting service by a means that was not a telephone betting service. It is alleged that the betting contracts with group members are void or were breached as a result and that by representing that the Fast Code service was lawfully provided, Sportsbet engaged in misleading and deceptive conduct under the Australian Consumer Law. The group members seek damages and restitution.
The trial of the proceeding will begin on Monday 3, August 2026 at 10:30am before the Honourable Justice Craig and is expected to run for approximately 2 to 3 weeks.

Will it cost me anything to be part of the class action?
No. It will not cost you anything to be part of the class action and you will never be asked to pay any costs out of your own pocket . Costs will only be payable if: the case is settled - meaning Sportsbet agrees to pay compensation without needing a trial; or there is a trial and we win the case. Court orders are needed for any payments to be made to Maurice Blackburn. The Supreme Court of Victoria has made a group costs order (GCO) in this proceeding. The GCO means if there is a successful outcome in the Sportsbet Class Action, any legal costs payable to Maurice Blackburn will be calculated as a fixed percentage (33%) of the total money we recover for everyone in the class action, rather than being calculated using time-based billing. Important points to note: If the class action is unsuccessful and the defendant’s costs need to be paid, Maurice Blackburn will pay those costs. The Court oversees and approves the final legal costs at the end of the proceeding. Copies of the GCO orders are available in the 'Key documents' section below. Group members in the Sportsbet Class Action will never pay any ‘out of pocket’ costs, whether or not the case is successful. Read more about class actions costs .

An in-play bet is one made after the beginning of a sporting event. In-play bets are also referred to as “live bets”. The Fast Code service operates by the customer selecting a bet on a live event (e.g. a certain team to win) on the Sportsbet app or website. The Sportsbet app or website then displays a code (e.g. XPE). The customer phones Sportsbet and recites the code to place the bet.
What if I made an in-play bet with another company?
This class action is only for in-play bets made with Sportsbet. The class action does not seek compensation for bets made with other companies. We are however conducting a similar class action in relation to in-play bets using the Neds and Ladbrokes Fast Code service. You can find more information on the Neds/Ladbrokes Class Action here .
What if I am unsure if I lost money using Sportsbet’s Fast Code service?
If you made at least one in-play bet using Sportsbet’s Fast Code service between 24 December 2018 and 24 December 2024 but are unsure if you lost money, we still encourage you to register your interest.
What if I have suffered losses from in-play betting beyond just the money I spent on bets?
The Sportsbet Class Action alleges that customers who placed a losing in-play bet with Sportsbet’s Fast Code service are entitled to a refund of their losses. The class action does not seek compensation for other losses a person may have suffered because of in-play betting or gambling with Sportsbet more generally. If you believe you have a claim for additional compensation because of your individual circumstances, you will have to pursue this claim independently of the Sportsbet Class Action.
